AI is a stress test for your fundamentals

Remember the last time you asked ChatGPT a very questionable question and it returned an answer so self-affirming it felt almost heartwarming for a split second, until it felt fraudulent?

If the starting point is a knowledge gap, or worse, incorrect information, the end point is just well-articulated, multiplied noise. And it's dangerous, because in the human world, well-articulated has historically been confused with deeply knowledgeable. People with real functional depth can cut through it, but most won't.

In marketing, this shows up as layering AI onto setups that were never particularly clean to begin with. Multiplying creatives from a base that never really performed commercially or wasn't tightly aligned with the brand. Automating personalisation without a watertight audience strategy. Expanding reach without a clear view on incrementality. It feels like leverage, but in reality it's a stress test. It exposes what hasn't been fixed and amplifies it.

And fundamentals are fundamentals are fundamentals. Usually not very exciting. Clean systems. Clear logic. The boring parts done properly. Not layers of tools, decisions, channels and human judgement stacked over time.

If you want to find the operators who will hold up in this shift, look at their baseline. Strip everything away. Can they rebuild it from scratch? Can they explain it clearly, without hiding behind tooling or complexity? That's usually your answer.
